in washington. it will make the chuck hagel nomination look like nothing because this guy, jack lew, is in the heart of the obama administration, and he represents barack obama better than basically anybody. not only did they correct when he was white house chief of staff and budget director, but their values are aligned, and so this would be going right at the president who, as jeff sessions knows, deserves to have his own people in the cabinet. this whole presunmps that you object to somebody that's a brilliant nominee just because you don't like his politics, that's not the american way. >> welcome to the republican party of 2013. jonathan alter and jared bernstein, i wish we had more time. thank you. >>> coming up, a memo to mitt romney. the car guy. >> i drive a mustang and a chevy pickup truck. ann drives a couple of cadillacs actually. with the spark cash card from capital one, olaf gets great rewards for his small business! pizza! [ garth ] olaf's small business earns 2% cash back on every purchase, every day! helium delivery. jonathan alter and jared [ pop! ] [ garth ] why
. they're going to have a tough time i think making the case against chuck hagel who was twice wounded in vietnam as an enlisted man going up against the chicken hawks of the united states senate, and he's not going to take a lot of grief from them. he's a guy who has bled for his country and actually believes that war should be a last resort. it's a novel sentiment perhaps in the senate these days, but i think it will prevail. >> it certainly is. as the president said, war is not an abstraction to this man. ken, you recently reported that several anti-obama groups are going to try to make these nomination battles as permanent as debt ceiling battles. who is it that's behind this though, ken? >> well, in this particular case, the hagel nomination, as well as to an extent the susan rice nomination, which didn't even get off the ground, there are a group of these neoconservative organizations that are all affiliated to some extent with bill kristol, the weekly standard editor, that have spent a fair amount of money but more to the point have really leveraged the media and their own media
speaking with authority, but is this not another good reason for chuck hagel's nomination because he, unlike so many of his fellow republicans, prefers to act cautiously when it comes to these forays over seas? >> well, two things. he prefers to act cautiously using war as a last resort instead of a rather more immediate choice as had been the case over the last decade, but he's also a big supporter of working multilaterally and that's why he had been so critical of the bush administration in iraq. the problem wasn't necessarily that going into afghanistan too quickly. it was that we got distracted for all those years in iraq and let the situation in afghanistan deteriorate. chuck hagel was right at the time in criticizing the bush administration on this. that's why it has long struck me you would want a man who does not want to rush into warfare as a first resort sitting there in charge of the pentagon. >> right. mike, on a slightly broader scale, are you at all concerned that this president's rightful desire to get our troops out of these entrenched and intractable conflicts, that
, moving on to chuck hagel. he's been described as you know as a homophobic anti-semitic lover of hamas. doesn't this come down to where he said this about the pentagon. it is bloated and needs to be pared down. that's his greatest sin isn't it? >> that is one of them. i think the other was questioning the iraq war and eventually coming out and opposing the iraq war and saying after he cast the vote in favor of the iraq war, coming back and saying you know what? this was the wrong move. that created a lot of animosity. and we have seen criticism from the left. i do want to see a confirmation process. i want to know how he'll behave towards lbgt members of the military. >> and he has already apologized for those statements. >> absolutely. absolutely. but the charges that -- i mean, the thing that has really been ludicrous is because he hasn't been with mccain and lieberman an every vote in israel, not only is his anti-israel, he's anti-semitic. i think that shuts down any debate on the topic. >> had a change of heart as he was saying on the iraq war. and as peter binehart writes on the d
